What is Endodontics?

Endodontics, also known as root canal treatment or dental endodontics, is a specialty within dentistry that focuses on the treatment of the dental pulp and the structures surrounding the root of a tooth. The dental pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. The primary goal of endodontics is to save teeth that have suffered damage to the pulp due to decay, dental trauma, fractures, or other injuries. During a root canal treatment, the endodontist or specialized dentist removes the infected or inflamed pulp, cleans and disinfects the root canal, and then seals the empty space with a biocompatible filling material. Root canal treatments are common procedures and are generally performed to relieve severe tooth pain and prevent the spread of infections that could lead to tooth loss. After root canal treatment, the tooth is typically restored with a dental crown to provide additional strength and protection. Endodontics is an important part of restorative dentistry and plays a crucial role in preserving dental health and the function of natural teeth.
